Surabaya — Ahsanul Minan, Dean of the Faculty of Law at Nahdlatul Ulama Indonesia University (Unusia), has urged the General Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) to ensure its institutional communications go beyond merely conveying internal agendas and instead provide information that is relevant and impactful for the public.

Ahsanul Minan made these remarks during an evaluation of Bawaslu’s publication and media coverage policies—conducted during the non-election phase—in Surabaya on Wednesday (August 26, 2026). He emphasized the need for caution when crafting public narratives, particularly by ensuring that all information disseminated is grounded in facts and legal certainty.

"Narratives to be conveyed must be vetted to ensure they align with legal facts. We must avoid narratives that preempt actual legal processes or statuses," Ahsanul Minan stated.

Beyond the aspect of legal certainty, the evaluation also addressed how Bawaslu’s communications could be tailored to better meet public needs. Agnes Swetta Pandia, a media practitioner from *Harian Kompas*, suggested that releases should not stop at ceremonial aspects but should instead explain the issues at hand, actions taken, and the impact on voters.

Meanwhile, communications practitioner Siti Khofifah highlighted the importance of viewing media coverage from the public's perspective, specifically regarding framing, information value, and public interest. Masykurudin Hafidz, an academic specializing in elections and democracy, also advocated for utilizing supervision data as a source of election-related information that is accessible and useful to the public.

The participation of the Unusia Law Dean in the forum ensured that academic insights strengthened the legal perspective in developing institutional communications that are accurate, data-driven, and oriented toward the public interest.
